#Exhausted is a UK pressure group against unnecessary noise from vehicle exhausts. It calls for vehicles to be taxed by noise output as well as CO2, for more peaceful homes and minds.
Vehicle exhaust noise blights countless homes and is an acute stressor to those with noise-sensitive conditions, such as autism, schizophrenia, anxiety and PTSD.
Vehicle noise is getting worse, due to weak laws, reluctant enforcement and a growing number of cars and bikes built for extreme noise. Noise legislation has not kept up; enforcement isn’t working – there are shocking holes in the MOT system, vehicle approval and police procedure.
#Exhausted works to:
- Campaign for vehicles to be taxed by noise in addition to CO2. Both noise and CO2 are harmful: why tax only one? Tax policy has halved sales of new diesel vehicles in four years – and tax policy can do the same for noise.
- Research and promote new ideas in noise reduction policy.
- Remind politicians that current law goes unenforced and is largely unenforceable.
- Remind manufacturers that noise-enhanced exhausts are inherently anti-social.
#Exhausted believes unnecessary exhaust noise is a form of mass pollution for which the polluter should pay.
Noise is carbon. Electric vehicles are coming: they’ll arrive sooner if unnecessary exhaust noise is gently taxed off the road.
